It is never too late to stop smoking. Stopping smoking will not only have an impact on your health, but your lifestyle as well. Improvement in your sense of taste and smell is probably one of the first changes you will notice. Oxygen levels in your blood will return to normal leading to improvement in breathing and circulation. Risks of developing certain diseases and illnesses (such as cancers) will fall.
Stopping smoking means you will not be exposing others to second hand smoke. You will also get rid of the smell of stale tobacco, and your appearance may well improve! Saving time and money is another key advantage.
There are a wide range of treatments and therapies available. Studies have shown that you are twice as likely to successfully stop with these compared to using willpower alone, and four times as likely to stop when there is behavioural support provided.
The two types of treatments are Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and prescribed medicines. The table below outlines the wide range of products that are available. These can be obtained via prescription from your GP, and you will pay a prescription charge if you normally do so.
NRT products substitute the nicotine in your cigarettes, and can help with physical withdrawal symptoms. Unlike cigarettes, NRT products do not contain carbon monoxide, tar or the harmful chemicals and toxins in cigarettes.
NRT products are available to anyone over the age of 12 years. They can also be used in women who are pregnant and breastfeeding, although medical advice should be sought from your GP or pharmacist. Certain conditions that require regular medication may need to be monitored during the quit attempt. Please contact us or your GP if you have any medical problems or take any medication.
Nicotine patches deliver a constant stream of nicotine when worn on the skin. They are suitable for regular smokers and can be worn over 16 to 24 hours.
Nicotine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth when the gum is chewed.
Nicotine gum is available in two strengths.
These are sucked slowly, and nicotine is absorbed through the lining or your mouth.
Nicotine Lozenges are available in three strengths.
This is a small tablet that is placed under the tongue. It dissolves to release nicotine which is absorbed in the mouth.
The inhalator is a plastic piece containing a nicotine cartridge. It releases nicotine vapours into the mouth. Suitable for smokers who miss the "hand-to-mouth" action.
The spray delivers a metered dose of nicotine into the nostril. Recommended for heavy smokers.
Unlike NRT, these medicines do not contain nicotine, but help alleviate the cravings associated with stopping smoking. They change the way your body responds to nicotine, and change the way that cigarettes feel when you smoke.
These treatments are only available on prescription, and your GP needs to check your medical records to ensure suitability. They are not available to anyone under the age of 18 years, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
