Nurofen Plus Tablets are over-the-counter painkillers used for managing severe and moderate pain in the UK. Their combination of ibuprofen and codeine offers fast-acting pain relief for various conditions, including rheumatic and muscular pain, cold and flu symptoms, migraines, headaches, period pain, and dental pain. Nurofen Plus is suitable; other painkillers alone have not provided effective pain relief.
What are Nurofen Plus Tablets used for?
Nurofen Plus Tablets are a powerful pain relief medication that combines ibuprofen and codeine. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug that works by reducing inflammation and pain in the body, whereas codeine, an opioid, helps to alleviate pain further. This combination of working together effectively changes the body’s response to pain, swelling, and a high temperature.
How do Nurofen Plus Tablets work?
Nurofen Plus Tablets combine the effects of two active ingredients: ibuprofen and codeine. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug that reduces inflammation and pain in the body. In contrast, codeine, an opioid, helps to further alleviate pain by mimicking the action of natural pain-reducing compounds called endorphins, which are found in the brain and spinal cord.
How many Nurofen Plus Tablets should I take?
The recommended dose for adults taking Nurofen Plus is 1 or 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed; however, you shouldn’t take any more than 6 tablets within 24 hours. It’s essential not to take Nurofen Plus Tablets for more than 3 consecutive days unless advised by a pharmacist or GP, as the active ingredient, codeine, can cause addiction if misused.
Who are Nurofen Plus Tablets suitable for?
Nurofen Plus is suitable for people over 12 years of age who need short-term pain relief. However, they are not suitable if you:
- Are allergic to paracetamol, codeine, or other ingredients listed in the medication.
- Are already taking other medicines containing paracetamol or codeine.
- Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding
- Metabolise codeine into morphine quickly
Additionally, if you suffer from Asthma, liver or kidney disease, bowel problems, gall bladder removal, have low or high blood pressure, or a thyroid disorder, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before taking Nurofen Plus Tablets. If you’re still unsure whether this medication is suitable for you, read the patient information leaflet.
How to use Nurofen Plus Tablets
Nurofen Plus Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. If the pain returns, you can take another dose every 4 hours. You should not take more than 6 tablets within 24 hours. Neurofen Plus Tablets should not be taken for more than 3 days consecutively. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
