What is Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)?

It’s one of the most taboo issues for men- Erectile dysfunction (ED).  You may know it as impotence, but most men will just call it “not getting hard”.  In medical terms, erectile dysfunction is not having a firm enough erection for sexual intercourse. Some men may not be able to get an erection at all, in fact 5% of men who are above 40 years of age experience complete ED.

Erectile dysfunction is something that nearly all men will face at some point in their lifetime. Age can affect your chances of having it, but younger men are also increasingly becoming affected. It is still an issue that is off-limits for some, as (in their minds) they may feel less of a man, and unable to satisfy their partners. As clinical practitioner I am seeing more and more patients seeking support, and I think one of the reasons for this is the availability of drugs to treat it.  However for others, the shame and embarrassment can stop them from getting help.

So what causes Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)?

The causes of ED can be both physical and psychological.

Reduced blood flow to the penis is one of the physical causes of ED. Some medical conditions (such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure) can contribute to this. Low testosterone can also be a cause, and I would advise for testosterone levels to be checked prior to treatment.

The psychological causes of ED are many, but stem from the fact that the brain is involved in feeling arousal. Problems around anxiety and stress can affect this process, and generally speaking, most men under 40 who suffer from ED have psychological causes. So it can become a bit of a vicious cycle- if you are depressed and as some may put it “unable to perform”, this can push you further into depression. Although there is medication available (almost everyone has heard of Viagra), treating the underlying depression or anxiety cannot be overlooked, and I have recommended patients to try cognitive behavior therapy (CBT).

I would also advocate making health changes alongside medical treatment. Some conditions that cause erectile dysfunction are linked to poor diet and lifestyle. So cutting back on salt, sugar, unhealthy fats and incorporating 30 minutes of exercise per day are great for anyone wanting to improve their health.
